Rosa sub Rosa 6 - Drinking Songs (2009)

Utrecht's venerable Rosa Ensemble joins forces with six composers from The Hague in the premiere of "Drinking Songs," a kaleidoscopic series of pieces which examine different aspects of human endeavor through the lens of a drinking glass.  We'll have a full bar ready for you, so pick your poison, pull up a chair and join us for a few Drinking Songs...

The project is based on the character of the elements (water, earth, fire, air) used in astrology:

Water:  emotion, feeling, matters to do with intuition
Earth:  materiality, solidity, planning, practicality
Fire:  action, positivity, physicality, energy
Air :  intellect, mind, media, matters to do with communications

And the 3 qualities that can apply to each:

Cardinal:  the initiator
Fixed: steadfast, stubborn
Mutable: adaptable, changeable

From this you get 4 sets of 3 signs each (the 12 signs of the zodiac).  We use the basic framework as a practical method for composing a 4 minute piece for each element-quality combination. As such, it becomes a 48 minute program split into four 12-minute sections. The beverage motif fits into these four divisions; we substitute specific drinks for each sign, etc.

“Rosa Sub Rosa 6: Drinking Songs” is a multimedial programme combining music with video projections, theatrical elements and balanced lightning. Three Rosa musicians and four of the sic composers take the stage.

Drinking Songs is a dynamic, adventerous and strange programme about booze, drinking and human behaviour.
